Artist's Statement

I especially love the illustration work I've been getting in recent years. It involves reading through the copy or puzzle idea and deciding the best way of visualizing it. My experience of interpreting verse or copy helps me with the detail necessary for humorous illustration. "Brainstorming" over the phone with art directors about the best way to illustrate a story or puzzle idea is something I'm comfortable with. I welcome the challenge of a design or illustration problem and coming up with a visual solution.
I also love designing letter forms to accompany my illustration work when it's appropriate. Art directors seem pleasantly surprised when I add the title or headline in a hand-lettered form to the sketch. Hand lettering has become a lost art in this day and age, but I think it sometimes adds a bit more personality and accessability to my illustrations. -David Helton
