David and fellow artist Lyn Martin sit at a table that David painted at Mojo Burrito in Chattanooga. | Cleveland had a new rock 'n' roll radio station and David sent some cartoons to them commenting on their programming. That led to part-time work with WMMS Radio and the creation of "The Buzzard." Cleveland seemed to be full of creative people and the WMMS staff helped David further develop the Buzzard. David went as far as you could go as an artist at AG, then struck out on his own freelancing for the first time. The Buzzard character became popular and that created more work. "I was supplementing my radio station art of t-shirts, TV commercials and billboards with other greeting card and children's book freelance." After some years of radio work, the parent company of WMMS moved David to New York City. "I took it as a challenge and went to N.Y. to set up an art department for all the company's properties." David always knew eventually he would be back freelancing illustration and after 5-6 more years of radio, he moved back to Chattanooga to freelance children's books and magazine illustration. "This is the kind of work I'd like to do the rest of my life! All my influences, experiences and travel have led me to this point. I love doing my illustration work!" |
